It is an alcohol and ammonia based product. However windex has become a popular floor cleaner with many positive responses. I tried water and vinegar and it helped a little but the smudgy footprints remain. My floors are a little dull and there may be a residue that i am hoping over the next few months of just swiffering and cleaning with only water will also be removed.

Because it works windex does remove residue build up or film but the downfalls is that it will kind of ruin your hardwood floor since it strips off the finish. After the recommended hour of no walking on it dogs and people walking on dry floor created horrible smudges that won t clean off.
